Lees Lukas 2:8-20

If you see yourself as an ordinary person, a simple person with ordinary challenges, you are in good company.

Because the good news of great joy was first brought to these ordinary shepherds.

That particular night was a dark night. And dark times.
And their lives were not easy.
They did not have soft and warm beds.
They were exposed to the elements.
They did not have running water to drink from the taps.
They did not have a warm shower every day.
There were constant danger of jackals and thieves who tried to catch their sheep.
They had to get up every now and then in the night to tend to the sheep.
Without a spotlight.
Without electrified fenced and Chubb security.

It was not an idyllic life.
It was challenging.

Furthermore these people were despised by the good orthodox people of the day. Because they could not keep the details of the ceremonial laws of all the washings.
Their flocks made far too constant demands on them.

Financially they tried to make ends meet. But did not really sucseed.

Even the political situation under the Roman authorities were challenging.

You see: It was dark!
It was really dark!

Politically. Financially. Socially. And spiritually.

We can identify with it. Today in South Africa.

And in this darkness … suddenly there shone a new light.
The light of the glory of God. The doxa-light of God.

It was the light of God’s presence.
….. God’s grace for ordinary people.
….God’s love for people who were challenged to survive.

For them the light of the glory of God appeared.
It shone in into their dark challenged lives.

And eventually it started shining through them to the rest of this dark world.

“ Gloria in excelsis Deo.”
“Eer aan God in die hoogste hemel.”
