WHAT DID YOU HEAR IN THIS PASSAGE?

We have adopted a custom of sharing with each other what we have HEARD in the word, thus i give a moment for us turn into groups of 4 and share THAT which we heard in this passege. And after the short sharing with each other i would like you to tell me what you guys shared with each other.  Please share with each other based on the following that you heard in the passage.

(If you follow us online please write down what you have heard)

WHAT DID YOU HEAR IN THIS PASSAGE?
THE CRISIS in the Passage ?
THE PLAN in the Passage ?
THE DISPLAY of GOD’s ALMIGHTY POWER ?

If you look at the passage it is clear what the Crisis is and what Plan is to resolve this predicament. In the passage we also find that we may come to a point where we ignore the crisis or we deny that it’s the crisis we find ourselves in.

That leads to us not seeing the plan for what it truly is or we see the plan, but we deny or lose hope in this plan.
But God is so merciful to us and He shows us his almighty power and wisdom. Especially when even though we may become sadden by the plan, or we that we may not see the plan for what it is. He enters into our lives by revealing to us His Glory and His power. As we read in the book of 1 Cor 1 verse 22 that “Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom.

It is important that we see these three stories as a reflection of the stories of most of us- just as it was in the lives of those who heard what Jesus had told a certain ruler or a friend, spouse, family member or boss who looked to find favour with God by means of their health, wealth or wisdom… as it is written up in verse 26 “Those who heard this asked, “Who then can be saved?

This is a reflection of the earlier chat Jesus had with him in verse 20You know the commandments: ‘You shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’ a ”21“All these I have kept since I was a boy,” he said.

22When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy. 24Jesus looked at him and said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 25Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”

I also want to read this to you
Matthew 16 verse 24 ” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25For whoever wants to save their life f will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. 26What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

What is the crisis that you find yourself in today?

Which crisis do you find yourself in that is preventing you from receiving eternal life?

What is the in your LIFE the CRISIS that you find yourself in that’s preventing you from giving it all up and wholeheartedly following Jesus?

You might not be wealthy but you might HAVE something else that’s your crisis preventing you from giving it up to and to follow Jesus.

Now remember Jesus is not a figure that is passive or that is selfish in what he does. He only has your eternal future in mind all the time and all He does is for you. He is the ONLY PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE! Christ crucified is the Plan!

The passage starts with a deep level of interest shown by a certain leader on what Jesus has to say about what he must do to inherit eternal life. It starts with this because, the leader knows deep down that something is wrong with the plan that he is following now and there is another plan. We all know at a deeper level when the plan we think is the right on is actually not.

But it also starts this way I think because, Jesus will announce through this story to his disciples for the third time a super important message. A message that has eternal implications imbedded in it.

His crucifiton and His resurrection and the fulfilling of the scriptures…

There is only ONE THING you can do to inherit eternal life and it’s not even by your “grace or your actions “or by you saving yourself but by the saving grace of God through Jesus that died on the cross for us.

I think Luke deliberately wrote these stories in this sequence. I think God shows us through these stories that we are in a deep dismal crisis without Jesus. And that like the certain ruler we at some point will realise that we cannot buy or manipulate our way into the kingdom of heaven and inherit eternal life.

But Jesus says to the ruler as we read in Luke 18 verse 22 “… he said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”23When he heard this, he became very sad, because he was very wealthy.

The main reason why we ask or get to this question is due to a sort of crisis that we find ourselves in.

We have a CRISIS that’s preventing us from understanding the depth of what it is to inherit the kingdom of God. And we have ways of justifying it.

I have no idea what your crisis is, but you all may agree with me that there is a particular crisis that you find yourself in.

A crisis that is preventing you from being void of all “lack”. The young man after mentioning to Jesus all the great things which he has done. Or your crisis might be that you still don’t fully believe in the plan or make allowance understanding of the plan, you go about not listing to the plan even if its been preached to you over and over and over. How may times have you heard the story of Jesus by the way and do you still find yourself in crisis instead of in Christ Crucified circle – accepting Him as the only plan, above all the money, success or prosperity the world brings.

Know that Jesus brings salvation through the cross, the world brings crisis through denying the Christ. I know it can be tough to follow this plan- if you do it on your own, or if you resort to own interpretation or own plan…it was even tough for the disciples because they did not see the plan. Look here.

S18 Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time

S19 31Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. 32He will be delivered over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him and spit on him; 33they will flog him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again.”

S20 34The disciples did not understand any of this. Its meaning was hidden from them, and they did not know what he was talking about.

They did not understand- the PLAN.

Thus, God has to send a sign to them that don’t YET SEE THE PLAN by Jesus answering the call of a beggar who with all in his heart just wanted to have SIGHT! Look at how Gods grace and power comes to our aid when we don’t see the plan even though it is told to us.

S21 A Blind Beggar Receives His Sight

S22 35As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. 36When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. 37They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

38He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

S23 39Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

S24 40Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him, 41“What do you want me to do for you?”

“Lord, I want to see,” he replied.

S25 42Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” 43Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.

I think we all don’t always listen to God and understand His plan, thus we get caught up in our crisis and it seems like we don’t see – even though that’s all we desire. Thus, I think and have experienced it in my own life sometimes that, we are like the bagger must make the realisation that we cannot solve this crisis we find ourselves in, this crisis that blinds us to see the PLAN – Christ Crucified!

Cor 1 verse 22 that “Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom.

I conclude. Dear brothers and sisters- I personally know how difficult it can get in life. How tough it is to hear the plan, the plan to crush the crisis but that we ought to follow Jesus but we don’t see the fulfilment of the plan. We end up finding ourselves in hectic crisis positions- where we just don’t see a thing. We lose hope in what we think the plan is without understanding or seeing it for what it is.

It may even sadden us deeply.

Our relationships with family might be the crisis.
Our relationships with work staff and our boss might be the crisis.
Our studies might be the crisis.

Our situation at home might be the crisis.

Our future plans being uncertain might be the crisis
Our finances might be the crisis.

All this might be our realities and we might lose sight of the plan and not even understand it. But thank God our crisis is not the be all and end all. No! The Christ Crucified crushes that crisis and the Power and Wisdom of God is fully displayed to all of Us. We all have our crisis that seems to defeat and prevent us from seeing the plan and it might sadden us to hear what it us we need to give up , but we all have the opportunity to gain EVERYTHING and SEE the plan through the Crucified Christ that provides us with eternal life if we follow Him. And this displays the Glory and the Power of God Almighty- this all is revealed to us when we desire to have sight – shouting like a blind man to Jesus. Lord have mercy on me…Lord that I may see…especially when we doubt. Cry out to Jesus in the midst of your crisis. Christ crucified is the only plan for all of us and this plan displays how Christ destroys the crisis and we receive Him as our Lord and Savior. May Christ Crucified who is the ultimate display of God’s Power and Gods Wisdom crush the crisis in your life. Amen
